Dubsmash: What It Is And How It Can Be Used.

Video content has been popular for a long time, so it is no surprise that more than one platform emerged and gained popularity due to its video creation and editing tools. Dubsmash is one of those platforms.

What Is Dubsmash?

Dubsmash is a mobile app that allows users to combine or “smash” user-generated videos, with pre-recorded sounds or music known as “dubs”. It is essentially a lip-syncing app, where the most popular dubs come from famous movie dialogues, quotes, and songs, although users can also create their own sounds.

 

The History Of Dubsmash

The Dubsmash app was originally launched in 2014 and had a brief moment of virality until it started losing users in 2015. This was mainly because the app was not working as a network, meaning that people were able to edit and record their videos, but not share them on the platform.

In 2017, Dubsmash was rebuilt and resettled in Brooklyn in an attempt of getting closer to their demographic: Black teenagers who were posting dancing and lip-syncs to popular songs.

In a desperate bid to match the features of Musically (the app that was rising in popularity back then), Dubsmash spent a year adding Following and Trending feeds. Although it still lacked the augmented reality filters and the cut transitions, Dubsmash had the remix option for soundtrack clips.

It wasn´t until 2018 when ByteDance merged Musically into TikTok that Dubsmash was saved. Thanks to the popularity of the new platform and format of sharing content, Dubsmash was able to reemerge and rose in popularity once more. People were more interested in short-form videos, so they started using both TikTok and Dubsmash. (Xanax)

In 2020, Reddit announced the purchase of Dubsmash. The three executives from Dubsmash will work at Reddit and gain ownership over Dubsmash´s video creation tools.

One of the latest features announced by Dubsmash is Shoutouts, created as an effort to incentivize creators. This feature allows users to pay to have a personalized message or video created by influencers, which means more exposure for the user. The move should generate increased interest in the platform for new and existing users.

Dubsmash holds second place in leading the short-form video market, just after TikTok.

 

How Your Brand Can Use Dubsmash.

Here are some ideas of how to include them in your digital marketing tactics:

  1. Using popular movie quotes: you can find a way to relate your brand and company to a popular movie quote or song, and upload either a highly produced or a homemade clip to jump in on different trends and show your company´s personality.
  2. Using your brand´s jingle: One of the biggest advantages of Dubsmash is the remix tool. You can use your unique jingle for your videos, encouraging users to share their content remixing the original sound. This will help you be in the mind of the consumers while having access to user-generated content.
  3. Influencers: Like any other social media platform, Dubsmash allows users to have paid content in the network. You will need to do your research before finding the right fit for your brand´s voice and needs, but working with an influencer is a good option. Consider that this app works within very specific niches, so take advantage of it and get those interactions up.
