Facebook and Instagram Updates You Should Know About: August 2020
Social media is an ever-changing environment that is constantly full of updates keeping those who are invested in digital marketing on top of their game. Whether you’re a Boomer or part of Gen X, there’s a large chance you’re on at least one social media platform. Facebook and Instagram are fan favorites when it comes to connecting with family and friends, finding new products, and creating a loyal customer database. Every few months, each of these platforms survey trends and make updates that help its users to communicate better whether it’s personally or as a business. Here are a few Facebook and Instagram updates you should know about in August 2020.
Facebook:
  • New custom ads for those who have “shopped” your page – Being able to control who your ads are targeted to is a huge help for any business, but now Facebook is allowing a new option within custom audiences to target those who have viewed products, added them to their baskets, or even made past purchases.
  • More shopping options – As of July businesses are able to create a product catalog within their business manager as long as your products are connected to your Instagram shopping account.
  • New emojis available in Messenger – Facebook Messenger has added a packet of new “moodies” aka emojis including a heart-eyes, mad face, shocked, crying, and over a dozen more.
  • Screen-sharing in Messenger via mobile app – In a world were virtual communication is more important than ever, Facebook’s mobile app is allowing users the ability to share their screen – much like competitor chatting apps like Zoom.
  • Group calls for up to 50 people – Just like the usefulness of screensharing, being able to conference in team members or an entire party-worth of friends is very important and Facebook has jumped to satisfy the need.
Instagram:
  • Reels video feed – Thanks to the success of China’s TikTok, Instagram is here with its own viral video concept with the launch of Reels, a similar video feature. Reels is integrated into both the newsfeeds and Story portions of Instagram allowing users to make quick edited videos to share with their following.
  • Pinned comments on posts – Instagram is now allowing users the ability to pin up to three comments to the top of their posts. This feature is ideal for answering commonly asked questions or expressing excitement about a new product or service.
  • Wear a mask reminder – COVID-19 is very much still a concern throughout the country, and as such Instagram is trying to keep its users safe by reminding them to wear a mask with an alert frequently posted on the top of their homepage.
  • Voting information center available – It’s election season and Instagram is part of the conversation with a voting center available for its users containing information such as state registration sites, polling locations, early voting options, and more.
Keeping up with social media and its constant updates is a tough job – especially for those who are also maintaining and running a business.
