Instagram is Testing Removing Likes & Here’s What That Means for You

Back in April, it was announced that Instagram would start testing the removal of “likes” on its ever-so-popular photo and video platform. While many were immediately outraged at the idea, head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, explained that it was about changing how people view the platform and social media in general.

Studies have shown that social media users, specifically those of the younger generations, are effected by the number of “likes” they receive (or may not be receiving) in comparison to their peers.

What Will Your Instagram Look Like Without Likes?

This test, that’s likely to become permanent, has already taken place in several countries around the world including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Italy and New Zealand. The new “like”-less platform will still allow users to see the total number of people who have “liked” their own posts as well as who has liked it. Others will no longer be able to see the number of users who have double tapped another user’s post. Now under photos posted by other accounts it where the likes would usually be, it will read ‘[name of Instagram account] and others’.

As of Thursday (November 14th), it’s hit the United States and users are already beginning to see the change.

What Does Instagram’s Likes Removal Mean for Influencers?

Many people are on board for what appears to be one of the biggest changes to ever happen to Instagram. By removing the “likes” the competitive nature of Instagram will ideally slowly fade away, allowing for users to focus on the content rather than the engagement it’s receiving. Others are worried about how this could affect the ability of social media influencers to continue their business practices and abilities to prove themselves as useful to the businesses they are being paid to promote. Fret not, Instagram is working to make the Creators section of the platform more analytical for those who need to share their stats with businesses they are partnering with.
