Guide to Twitter's New Relevance-Based Algorithm

Guide to Twitter’s New Relevance-Based Algorithm
As a marketer, it can be hard to keep up with the changes in algorithms for each social media channel. Just when you start to benefit from higher engagement, the process changes, and it’s time to rethink your online marketing strategy. Twitter is a platform that has remained relatively stable in its algorithm until recently. From the beginning, Twitter was based solely on timeliness. As a marketer, the best way to reach your audience using Twitter was to make sure you were posting frequently to ensure that your followers would see your tweets when they signed into their accounts. However, the algorithm has changed recently to mimic more of the relevance-based patterns we see on Facebook and Instagram. Meaning, the more engagement you have with certain accounts, the higher the likelihood that the account will show up in your feed. Therefore, instead of seeing tweets based on when they were posted, you’ll see tweets based on accounts with more engagement, and other accounts will see your tweets based on the engagement level of your tweets. This may sound a bit confusing if you aren’t used to a relevance-based algorithm on social media, but there are a few things you can do to help your tweets show up in the feeds of your followers.

Twitter Tips

Don’t be shy about liking and retweeting your own tweets. The more engagement your tweets have, the better the chance that others will see them. Go ahead and retweet yourself or like your own posts. Engagement is key in any of your interactions on Twitter, which means that it’s even more important to respond to those who mention you or your business. Even if it’s a simple “like” of the tweet. Make sure that you are not passing up the opportunity to engage with any account that mentions you in a positive way. Social media marketing can be tricky even for the most experienced marketers. With changes happening rapidly online, it’s important to keep up with tricks and trends. However, one thing is for certain: if you’re posting content that’s relevant to your audience on each platform, your engagement and your views, will outshine your competitors.
